Mariel Backal Sheinberg

Mariel is an associate in the Energy and Infrastructure and Environmental practice areas. She has experience advising energy sector projects at various stages, as well as the regulatory and administrative aspects of the sector. 

Prior to joining the firm as an associate, she clerked at Mexico’s Supreme Court and worked at the Legal Vice Presidency of the World Bank, where she focused on environmental, international, constitutional, and administrative law matters.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Universidad Iberoamericana, graduating with honors. She was awarded the Minister José de Jesús Gudiño Pelayo Award for extraordinary merit and has taught in the same university as an adjunct professor in the Energy Law course.

February 24, 2026
On February 20, in a landmark decision on the separation of powers with significant implications for international trade, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the President to impose tariffs unilaterally, as Congress has not clearly delegated its fundamental tax and tariff powers to the Executive Branch through that law.
