Mexico and the United States concluded the first formal round of negotiations under the Joint Review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), held on May 28–29, 2026, in Mexico City.

In Mexico, the shift toward preventive models already has legal backing in the current Federal Law for the Protection of Industrial Property (“LFPPI” or the “Law”) and in recent amendments published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on April 3, 2026, which strengthen the role of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property ("IMPI") as an enforcement authority and promoter of best practices.

On April 28, 2026, the new Regulations of the Federal Law for the Protection of Industrial Property were published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which will enter into force on July 22, 2026, and will repeal the Regulations of the Industrial Property Law of 1994.
